wordhippo.cc does two jobs that usually live on separate websites. The first is a thesaurus and dictionary: type any of more than eleven thousand English words and you get a single page with everything about it. Synonyms come grouped by meaning, so when you look up a word like bright you can choose between the light sense and the clever sense instead of scanning one undifferentiated list. The same page carries antonyms, plain-language definitions, example sentences, pronunciation, and word forms such as the plural, the past tense, the comparative and the superlative.

Rhymes deserve a special mention, because most rhyming dictionaries pad their lists with words that only look similar on paper. Ours are computed from phonetic dictionary data, which follows sound rather than spelling, and they are ranked by how common each word is. The rhymes at the top of the list are ones you would actually put in a lyric or a poem, grouped by syllable count so they fit your line.

The second job is word games. The word unscrambler takes up to fifteen letters, blanks included, and returns every playable word in milliseconds. The Wordle solver turns your green, yellow and grey clues into a short list of likely answers. There are Scrabble-style and Words With Friends finders that rank your rack by points, a crossword and codeword solver for pattern matching around the letters you already have, and browsable lists of 5-letter words, words by starting letter, ending letter and length. Everything runs inside your browser against the public-domain ENABLE word list, which is why results feel instant and why the tools keep working on a slow connection.

The two halves feed each other. Every word a solver finds links to that word's full page, so a word you discovered as a 24-point play is one tap away from its meaning and its history. Every word list links back to the tools. If you came to win a game, you can leave knowing a new word; if you came to write, the lists are there when you need a seven-letter word starting with S.

The data behind all of it is open: the Open English WordNet for senses and synonyms, the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary for sound, Wiktionary for word forms, and Tatoeba for real example sentences, each credited on thesources page. There is no account to create and nothing to install. Look a word up, solve your puzzle, and get back to whatever the word was for.
